Cycling for Beginners: Choosing the Right Bike

Mark H. Dunaway is the managing partner of BDK Consulting Group, a management consulting firm within the healthcare and financial services sectors. When Mark H. Dunaway is not working with business owners and investors to develop strategic plans to achieve business goals, he enjoys cycling.

Cycling is much more than simply riding a bike. When a recreational bike rider wants to transition to the more serious sport of cycling, the first step is determining what type of bike you want. Here are the three primary bike styles:

1. Road Bike: Road bikes are intended for fitness riding, racing, and long-distance riding, all along smooth pavement. A key feature of road bikes is their lightweight handlebars that curve downward, allowing for better speed and overall efficiency.

2. Mountain Bike: Mountain bikes are, of course, designed for rough, hilly terrain found along mountainsides. They are specially designed with shock-absorbing features and sturdy brake systems.

3. Hybrid Bike: Hybrid bikes can be ridden on both smooth and moderately rugged terrain. They mix the thinner wheels of a road bike with the flat handlebars, gear shifts and braking system of a mountain bike. Hybrid bike are commonly used as commuter bikes within urban areas.
