Innovative Learning at Atlanta’s Galloway School

Mark H. Dunaway has founded and led companies in Atlanta and California, including the BDK Consulting Group. As a philanthropist, Mark H. Dunaway gives to several organizations, including the Galloway School of Atlanta

Founded as a private, learner-focused school, the Galloway School’s academic philosophy is based on four D’s: daring, deliberate, dynamic, and discovery.

- Daring learning encourages students - and teachers - to take chances, regarding failure and risk as integral components of the educational process. The quality of that process determines success.

- In deliberate learning, students become reflexive, discerning their own thinking patterns through debate and discussion. To stimulate deeper reading and interaction, teachers present students with open-ended questions that help pupils move past their self-conceived limits.

- Dynamic learning creates an appreciation of learning as adventure. To interest all students, teachers adapt their styles to individual needs. As a result, students become self-directed learners, finding meaning through analyzing content and applying skills.

- Finally, in learning through discovery, students develop an ability to investigate real-world situations and tolerance for uncomfortable questions and answers. Researching these ideas builds contextual thinking skills and helps students explore the implications of their questions.
